The Dictionary and String Dictionary Fields work in together to create a searchable list of terms from which users can select.
The dictionary is used to create an initial list of terms that can then be referenced by a string dictionary, allowing users to search through the dictionary terms and select a term. The string dictionary can also be configured to allow updates, allowing users to add their own terms to the dictionary.
Dictionary
The Dictionary Field is used to create the default dictionary list that will be called by a string dictionary. This field is generally used at the functionality level by an administrator, who creates a list of terms that can then be added to a string dictionary, allowing users to search through the list of terms.
It will display a text box above a table which can be used to add new words to the list. To add a new word to the dictionary, type a word in the text box and click “Add”.
Note: Dictionary words cannot contain any Unicode characters.
To delete a word from the dictionary, click the “Delete” button next to the word to delete.
Grid Page Size
How many words should be displayed on each page of the dictionary? If there are more words in the dictionary than the grid page size, they will be paginated to allow navigation between pages.
String Dictionary
The String Dictionary Field generates a searchable list of terms, either predefined in a dictionary or entered directly into the field and saved. Users can then select and save a term from this list.
By default, a user is able to search through an existing list of terms in a dictionary. If “Allow Updates to Dictionary” is set to “Yes”, they are also able to add their own new words to the dictionary. Any new words added are save directly on the associated dictionary.
When creating a string dictionary field, a base dictionary field must be created first to provide an initial list of options that area searchable by the field.
Select Dictionary
This is the dictionary that will be linked to the field, and will display the strings initially created in the dictionary. If additional words have been added to the dictionary with a string dictionary field, these words will also be displayed as part of the dictionary.
The list of dictionaries can be stored at the functionality level and called across multiple workspaces.
Allow Updates to Dictionary
Determines if the user will be able to add new options to the dictionary from the string dictionary field.
If set to “Yes”, the user will be able to add their own words to the dictionary, directly on the string dictionary field. They will then be able to select the new term they added.
If set to “No”, the user will only be able to search through the existing list of terms in the dictionary to select a term.
