Fields – String Dictionary

A string dictionary creates a searchable list of the terms that have been either set to the list or entered into the string and saved. If required, this list can be added to every time the record is saved and means that the user can select the correct phrase from the existing list. This should help to prevent data errors such as typos or incorrect abbreviations by providing a formatted list of available options, but still allowing the user to add new options if required.

When creating a string dictionary field, a base dictionary field should be created first to both provide an initial list of options that area searchable by the field, and to allow all additions made through the string dictionary to be stored.

Below is an example of how a string dictionary field is presented in a form:

In addition to the typical string fields, the is Dictionary field allows the user to select which created dictionary will be linked to this field to provide a list of which terms have been previously entered in the string and saved as part of the dictionary. This list can be stored at the functionality level and called across multiple workspaces.

The Allow Updates field determines if the user will be allowed to add new options to the overall dictionary from the string dictionary field, rather than needing to edit the dictionary directly.
